Difficulty level: Moderate
Distance: 15 km
Duration: 3 hours
Terrain: Asphalt / gravel / boardwalks
Season: May–September
Suitable for: Adults, e-bikes

Description of the route

You can either start from Seljord town centre or begin after the steep uphill sections—for example at the lay-by before Reinstaul or at the parking area at Grimås. Starting higher up will make the trip shorter.

From Seljord town centre, follow the E134 towards Flatdal and turn off towards Grunningsdalen just after Lakshøl sawmill. There is a toll road (NOK 80).

If you cycle from Seljord centre, the road is paved until you turn off towards Grunningsdalen. The road is in good condition, with a steady climb at the beginning before it levels out at the top.

The cycling route runs more or less parallel to the Grunnåi river, which alternates between fast-flowing rapids and calmer, scenic stretches. Grunningsdalen is a classic U-shaped valley located between Mælefjell and Lifjell.

When you reach Slåkja, you can cycle across the boardwalks, which will take you to Sauland. From here, you can either turn back or continue on a longer loop via Sauland – Hjartdal – Seljord.

This extended round trip is significantly longer, 65 km.
