About

Step back in time to experience the original charm of Skien. In the Snipetorp district, you will find a continuous and unique neighborhood of traditional wooden houses dating back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries. As one of the few areas in Skien that survived the devastating Great City Fire of 1886, Snipetorp stands today as one of the town's most important historic landmarks and a highly desirable residential area.

History & Landmarks

Spared by the Great Fire of 1886

'When the destructive city fire swept through Skien in 1886, Snipetorp was miraculously saved. According to local lore, the flames stopped at a large pear tree in the garden of Snipetorpgata No. 8, right near the top of Snipetorp Hill.

The contrast between old and "new" Skien is clearly visible in the street layout:

  • Old Snipetorp (Pre-fire): Charming, narrow streets measuring around 6 meters in width.
  • The Rebuilt Fire Zone: Significantly wider streets at roughly 12.5 meters, designed to prevent future fires from spreading.

From a Bustling Gateway to an Idyllic Neighborhood

Snipetorp was originally one of the main entry roads into Skien. Unlike the quiet residential street it is today, it was once bustling with activity, housing numerous craft workshops, stores, and taverns. It was home to the city’s working class and lower middle class.

  • Historic Meeting Place: Bratsberggata 2, the largest building in Snipetorp, was home to a popular tavern offering food and accommodation to travelers entering the city.
  • Architecture: The district features mostly one- and two-story wooden houses with a blend of vertical and horizontal siding and varied rooflines. Today, most of these homes have been carefully restored.

Henrik Ibsen’s Connection to Snipetorp

Snipetorp shares a profound history with world-renowned playwright Henrik Ibsen:

  • The Ibsen Family Home (Snipetorpgata 27): Following Knud Ibsen's bankruptcy, Henrik Ibsen's formerly wealthy parents moved to this house in September 1843 with their five children. The house was built in 1827.
  • 22 Years of History: Henrik Ibsen’s parents, Marichen and Knud, resided at Snipetorp for 22 years until they eventually separated.

Experience the Snipetorp Market (Snipetorpmarken)

Every year on the last Sunday of August, a traditional open-air market the Snipetorpmarken is held.
