Skien offers a range of activities for both young and old. Kapitelberget on Bratsberg with its church ruins is the foremost memory of the powerful Dagætten in Skien. A popular and mysterious cave is the Mikaels cave, a rock cave in the steep rock wall by the lake Norsjø.

Experience fascinating bird watching from the top of the bird tower in the nature reserve Børsesjø. Paddling in the Falkumelva is like paddling in the wilderness, only that it is very close to the city centre. Lake Kilevannet is an attractive paddling lake for many, with its many inlets and bays and narrow straits. Skien is surrounded by beautiful hiking areas; in forests, on mountain tops or close to the city centre. The cultural trails have information signs about the history of the area.

Skien fritidspark, the large sports and leisure facility that has everything, invites you to a great number of fun activities for the whole family. The main attraction is a large water park and outdoor climbing park. Here you will also find a hotel, and the entire area as well as the hotel are adapted for guests with disabilities. The areas around the leisure park are ideal for both families and fitness enthusiasts.

The Telemark Canal starts in Skien. Join one of the canal boats on a day or half-day trip. Or take a trip to Løveid lock at Skotfoss and see when the canal boats pass through here in the summer season. A fascinating spectacle. Did you know that in the waters of central Skien you can catch salmon and trout on the hook? The conditions are also favorable for fishing in all the idyllic waters around the municipality.

There are plenty of nice places to swim in Skien. From the nearby swimming area, Bakkestranda, to quiet forest ponds and to the Garvann falls, with pools and waterfalls in a row. Here you can take a refreshing bath in these incredibly beautiful potholes and sunbathe on flat rocks.
