About

Explore one of Skien's most captivating outdoor artworks at Prinsessegata 1! This grand mural merges local Telemark emigration history with modern contemporary art, created by renowned American artist David Milton Guinn.

About the Artwork: Fiskeslepet anno 1910 and the America Boat

The mural is inspired by local historical events and personal narratives:

  • Historical Inspiration: The motif is based on an original photograph from Fiskeslepet in Skien from 1910, depicting a family waiting on the pier for the boat to Oslo, en route to the ship to America.

  • Personal Models: The artist used his own family members as models for the emigrants sitting on the dock—himself, his wife Desiree, and their children Pearl (6 months old) and Rose (6 years old).

  • Local Connection: The white-haired woman in the center of the painting was modeled after a preschool teacher from Betanien Kindergarten, who visited regularly while David was painting the wall.

About the Artist: David Milton Guinn

  • Background: Guinn is a professor of architecture and an acclaimed muralist/artist from Philadelphia, USA.

  • Recognition: His work has been featured in solo exhibitions, honored with numerous awards and grants, and documented in international books, newspapers, TV, and radio.
